Emotional Pain in Emotion-Focused Therapy: Reflections on the Polish Translation

New Resources in Polish!

Ból emocjonalny w terapii skoncentrowanej na emocjach. Jak bezpiecznie i skutecznie pracować z urazami psychicznymi oraz traumą  (Emotional Pain in Emotion-Focused Therapy: How to Safely and Effectively Work with Psychological Injury and Trauma)

How this new resource came to be… by Ilona Jurkiewicz-Buchala

I would like to share with you a story about an Australian EFT book that really wanted to be translated into Polish. This is how the story goes: “I won’t translate any more books into Polish!”, that was my firm decision after a 10year career of translating psychological books. And then I read Melissa Harte’s Processing Emotional Pain using Emotion Focused Therapy and got enchanted with its style, concise manner of presenting EFT theory, personal approach and, what is most important, with Melissa Harte herself. I had never had a chance to meet Melissa in person but after reading this publication I felt her message of improving the world through raising people’s emotional consciousness very close to my heart and really wanted the community of Polish psychotherapists to get to know her, benefit from her knowledge as well as to spread her wisdom around Poland.

The publishing houses I had cooperated with before were not interested in publishing the book as they had their publishing priorities. So – nothing ventured, nothing gained– I decided to take a risk and translate and publish it myself (with the self-proclaimed one-person technical department composed of an IT engineer, Bogdan Buchala, my husband, and Monika Buraczynska, the editor, privately my friend and an EFT enthusiast). I had never carried out such an undertaking before so the mission seemed impossible. Very soon the world started to shrink and it turned out that out of 8 billion people in the world I know one person, Kurt Renders, that knows another person, Lou Cooper, who could help me get things going. And that’s how it all started. Later in the process, the book was enriched with Anna Owczarska Osinska’s, the coordinator of the Polish EFT Institute, preface to the Polish edition, which added to its splendour.

To put it in a nutshell, surprisingly, it all worked and we (Poland) now have Melissa’s book on the Polish market to the great joy and enthusiasm of numerous psychotherapists from all around the country.

Melissa mentions synchronicity in her book as a “thing” that guides and motivates many people in their lives: “I am not really sure exactly what it is, but I do know it’s something that has motivated me my whole life”. I do not know what it is either or if it really exists, but I have a feeling that when you let go of your fears and listen to what you really want and need, nice and useful things can come out. For sure there’s a lot of fun. And isn’t it what the EFT is all about?
